Shed Costs: An Unremarkable Breakdown

First read the post about building the shed if you haven’t already done so to set the context of this post.

This post is a short, factual update on the costs—materials only. Time, effort, and travel have been excluded, mostly for my own benefit so I don’t think too much about it.

As expected, most of the money went into timber (the treated kind) and the corrugated iron for cladding. Still have two sheets left over, currently awaiting inspiration.

The shed is mainly built from treated wood, except for the side and back framing, which received a generous slathering of marine-grade oil. This was originally meant for the cut ends of the rafters but, as there was some left over, everything in the general vicinity ended up getting “protected”, including my hands.

Most materials were sourced from the local Mitre10, which is known for being more expensive than other suppliers. In return, they delivered everything to the closest possible point via the neighbour’s property and placed it within minimal carrying distance. The price difference effectively became a convenience fee for not having to drag 20‑kg bags of concrete uphill.

During this time, I also ended up on a first‑name basis with several of the Mitre10 staff., this proved useful when we needed to charge the drill and also for general community goodwill building – can’t put a price on that.

Total cost: $2,621 — approximately €1,500, depending on exchange rates and whatever general mood the global economy happens to be in.

Overall, I’m satisfied. I now have a place that’s dry, shady, and somewhat resistant to wind. It will also serve its most important purpose: storing the very tools that built it. A tidy full‑circle moment.
